“The Newsletter Growth Funnel Just Got Rebuilt”

Growing a newsletter used to be way easier. Back when BuzzFeed was cranking out millions of subscribers, all it really took were some landing pages, sign-up boxes, and the endless stream of free traffic from Google and Facebook. Fast-forward to today and things look totally different. Google’s AI Overviews keep people from even clicking through, Meta’s algorithm isn’t handing out reach anymore, and suddenly, newsletters can’t just sit back and wait for readers to roll in. It’s a tougher game, but not impossible if you play smarter.

The new growth playbook is built around four quadrants: Owned, Algorithmic, Earned, and Paid. Owned is stuff you control, like events or registration walls. Algorithmic is social/search, though it’s shakier than ever. Earned means collabs and cross-promotions, and Paid is where you pull out the wallet for ads or placements. The biggest wins right now? Earned and Paid. Whether it’s partnering with other newsletters, running smart Meta ads, or even acquiring another list, the goal is to mix and match tactics so you’re not relying on one fragile channel. Growth’s still out there — it just takes a little more hustle. (LINK)
